Here we present you with our short list of the best Bali art markets
that are special shopping destinations you can find in the island’s
major areas, so you can get going on your Bali shopping adventures. Even
if you aren’t in for the haggling or buying anything, a visit to any of
these art markets provides you with a glimpse into the wonderful
artistry and creativity of the island’s craftsmen.
Ubud Art Markt
The Ubud Art Market, locally referred to as 'Pasar Seni Ubud' is famous
as the most visited art market in Bali. The market forms one of Ubud’s
central landmarks, located just across the main Jalan Raya Ubud road
from the Puri Saren Royal Palace. The market plays a central role in
Ubud’s social and economic life, and is actually comprised of two
sections: the eastside part serves as the main traditional morning
market where locals shop for daily groceries and household items, while
at the art market, you will find unique items from colourful silk
scarves, tropical design shirts, handmade woven and cotton bags, baskets
or straw hats; statues, kites and many other hand-crafted items. The
art market is open every day except on ‘Nyepi’ or the Saka New Year,
when the whole island literally shuts down for a whole day.
- Opening Hours: 08:00 - 17:00
- Location: Jalan Raya Ubud main road, opposite the Puri Saren Ubud palace.
Sukawati Art Market
Sukawati Art Market, also known by its local name 'Pasar Seni
Sukawati', is the most longstanding art market in Bali, and regarded as
the island’s mother of art markets. Named after the village where it
resides (famous for its communities of traditional artists, comprising
sculptors, painters and dancers) Sukawati is often a highlighted tour
itinerary and the first that comes to mind for a myriad of souvenir
choices at great bargain prices. The art market comprises a main
two-storey building that is filled with many different stalls, some
specialising in garuda sculptures and Kamasan-style paintings, while
many others feature similar items – making your bargaining effort for
the best price much easier. With sufficient time on your hands, it is
best to patiently browse through and ask for comparison before finally
striking a deal. Sukawati Art Market is located on the main Jalan Raya
Sukawati Road in the Gianyar Regency, approximately two hour’s transfer
from Kuta and Denpasar.
- Opening Hours: 08:00 – 19:00
- Location: Jalan Raya Sukawati, Gianyar
Guwang Art Market
Guwang Art Market, locally referred to as ‘Pasar Seni Guwang’, is
often considered the sister art market of Sukawati, due to its
considerable size and similar offerings, and poses as a great
alternative to the usually crowded Sukawati. is the main arts and
souvenir shopping destination within the Guwang village community in
Gianyar regency, a closer option for those coming from the island’s
south who wish to do their souvenir shopping stopovers along common tour
itineraries to East Bali. The main market building that houses
different kiosks as centrepiece, you can also find many different
bargains around the perimeter, including traditional warungs that serve
Balinese cuisine, snacks and refreshments. Guwang itself is regarded as
an art village, and along the Jalan Raya Guwang main road you will see
rows of sculptors’ workshops, art shops and mini galleries, which you
can also drop in for a brief look, or a surprising deal.
Location: Banjar Cemenggaon, Desa Guwang, Sukawati, Gianyar
Kumbasari Art Market
Kumbasari Art Market (or Pasar Kumbasari), is Denpasar’s longstanding
art market that forms the central landmark and the city’s main
traditional market complex, together with the Badung Traditional Market.
The art market is located on the western side of the Badung River,
opposite Badung Market, and features two storeys laid out with small art
kiosks, textile and electronics shops. The locals also source their
daily household necessities and temple ritual items from several shops
here, from silk parasols, temple attire, to silver holy water vessels. The
art market is open around the clock, however each kiosk within varies.
The second level features a large hall where you can find a huge variety
of souvenir items and art pieces, from silverware and mini sculptures,
Balinese batiks and weaves in their raw form or shirts and ornamental
cloths, many paintings, and others. Some apply fixed prices, but with
most shops expect to bargain heavily.
Location: Jalan Gajah Mada
Kuta Art Market
Kuta Art Market saw its heyday before the rapid development of this
famous Beach resort area, and now is physically outshone by the modern
Kuta Square arcade that is lined with international designer brands,
surf shops and fashion boutiques. However, it remains an important part
of Kuta’s history, and still plays a major role as one of Kuta’s
landmarks and the longstanding traditional art market in the area.
Locally referred to as Pasar Seni Kuta, the art market is located right
at the junction of Jalan Bakung Sari and Jalan Kartika Plaza.
You
can easily access the rows of kiosks from the street side adjacent Kuta
Square or from the beach side south from the Balawista lifeguard
watchtower. The kiosks showcase varieties of souvenirs and locally
crafted goods that are produced elsewhere (most likely in the workshops
within the Gianyar regency), but it is convenient for shopping sprees on
short stays in Kuta. Prices can be high, so always bargain your way
out.
- Opening Hours: 08:00 - 22:00
- Location: Jalan Bakung Sari, Kuta
